Mozilla UK – a vote

Dear reader,
First of all. Thank you for reading my blog. Second, Mozilla UK recently went into beta and is now open for public viewing. There are currently 2 main themes that are in the runnings for the site launch, but which do you prefer and why? I will not pass any opinions of mine here, nor will I tell you which one I have been working on, but I would like to know.

So for comparison here they are (click for large image):

option 1

option 2

Please note that these are not the final designs, nor are they mockups. They are merely a rough idea as to the look and feel of the site. Feel free cast your opinions in the comments as well as suggest any changes you would make to either of the themes.

I prefer the second one because i LOVE the community logo and don’t really like the dolphins. Otherwise, I prefer the menus in the first one.

I’d vote for the second design. It’s a bit more polished in terms of layout and typography – the top navigation is easy and consistent, the left navigation is all to do with the user’s personal account, and on the right is a feed. This seems the correct balance for interaction – site-wide at the top, personal to the left, global on the right. The drawback of this design is that at least on this main page shown in the mockup, the column for text isn’t very wide. Fine for an introduction, but could be problematic if more text is presented. I’d make sure that the column is wide enough for easy reading on more text-heavy pages.
